Back in the dark days of the Internet, long before Peer-to-Peer networking
was widespread and before the concept of torrenting was even dreamed about,
I offered this nugget for sale to the DT fans on MikePortnoy.com. The show
itself is rather rare in that you don't often see it on trade lists. The
source was sent to me by Goo-Goo from MP.com, a 2nd generation VHS tape that
he sent from his personal collection. A contest was run for people to submit
reviews of Images & Words, and the winning submissions not only were sent
the DVD set first but were also immortalized by having their submissions as
"extras" on the discs. This was one of my first authoring projects.
Around this time the now infamous "Met II '96" demo began circulating, and I
decided to use that demo as the background music for an "Easter Egg". Not
long after I made that known, I recieved a personal email from Mike Portnoy
that went something like (and this may actually be verbatim), "Are you out
of your FUCKING MIND?!?!" Needless to say I had to re-author the disc with a
different demo, but unfortunately 3 copies went out with the Met II '96
demo. If you find a copy, you've found GOLD and I highly suggest not
spreading it around. This torrent will contain the re-authored disc.
While the quality isn't stellar, the performance was in James' hometown and
the energy is fantastic. A nice "Eve" is performed (you won't likely see
that played live anytime soon...), and the closeups look pretty nice. The
distant shots suffer from a gaussian blur-type effect. The Ronnie Scott's
footage is shot from the audience, not the more widespread MTV footage.
As with all DT videos, don't even bother downloading it if you're planning
on putting it on ebay, they'll shut you down in minutes. They won't even let
you sell the (legitimate) Fan CLub CDs anymore.
Dig this historical piece but SUPPORT THE BAND too. They're on tour and the
tickets are affordable, so go see 'em tear your local venue to shreds. |
